Many people use energy drinks as mixers with alcohol, and some energy drink marketers even claim that this is ok, but it is not! The combination of energy drinks and alcohol has several inherent dangers.

• Energy drinks are stimulants, and alcohol is a depressant. Just as with any drugs (legal and illegal), the combination of these two effects is not a wise one and is potentially dangerous. The stimulant can keep the body from become fatigued and thus hide the intoxication effects. Thus, the drinker doesn’t realize how much alcohol they have consumed and may just keep drinking.
• The stimulant could even make the drinker feel that they aren’t impaired, though their blood alcohol concentration could be very high. When the stimulant wears off, the effects of the alcohol could cause respiratory depression and other negative results.
• The energy drinks and the alcohol are both dehydrating fluids. So, not only do you run a much higher chance of becoming severely dehydrated, the body will also be less able to metabolize the alcohol.
• The mixture of energy drinks and alcohol can cause many other dangers to the user, like a racing heart beat, a very high blood pressure, and possibly even a heart attack.

The energy drinks themselves are not necessarily bad; in fact they will provide about the same effect as coffee or any other drink with the same caffeine levels. However, they should not be consumed with alcohol.
