If your choice of tool for measuring fat is the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), here are some tips on how to use it properly. You may think using this tool is safe because you are only checking for body fat. Don’t think that way, because you are using electricity. So be careful and think smart:

·        Don’t use a BIA if you have a pace maker or any other implanted medical device. The signals from the BIA will interfere with the device’s operation which may cause the device to fail.
·        When taking measurements, for best results take the measurements the same time everyday and try to stay on that schedule.
·        Drink enough water so you are not hydrated. If you are too dehydrated, your fat readings may be overestimated.
·        Do not take a measurement right after you eat. Always wait at least two hours to allow the food to digest.
·        If you are a woman: During your menstrual cycle or when having the change of life due to menopause, you have a tendency to hold water. This can also affect the reading. It is best to chart the readings when you are not in this cycle so you get a more accurate reading.
