Water aerobics are led by qualified instructors and may be performed with or without the use of music. The workout includes a variety of rhythmic movements and dance moves performed in the water. As the programs become more advanced, more complex dance steps and calisthenics movements will be introduced.
Typically, a water aerobic workout will last from 40 to 50 minutes including time for warming up and cooling down. Some routines involve the use of equipment. The following are types of equipment that may be used:
• Flotation Belts – When exercising in deep water, a flotation belt may be used. Flotation belts keep your body in alignment and allow your lower body to move more freely.
• Hand Webs – Gloves with webbing between the fingers to increase the resistance of the water.
• Kickboards – Used for supporting your weight during lower body workouts and to add to the resistance of the water.
• Aqua Blocks – A smaller barbell made for use in the water. As you press your arms through the water with the aqua block, the resistance will increase.
• Aqua Steps – A special non-skid step used in the water for aquatic step aerobics.
• Water Noodles – A four inch cylinder used for flotation when exercising in deep water.
• Aqua Hand Buoys – A foam or plastic barbell used for upper body conditioning in the water.
