How do I create my company vision?
Your vision should be clear and specific, be a guide for the entire company, and one that everyone feels comfortable speaking, acting on, and integrating into the company. In short, keep these things in mind/follow these steps to create a company vision—and don’t forget to check out the books, seminars, and other tools that will help you refine this vision and really make it your own:
- As all company leadership to identify the values they want the company to embody, then have them describe how they see these values reflected in reality.
- Ask company stakeholders the same question. How do their ideas mesh with those of the company leaders?
- Prepare a first craft of your Vision Statement, then ask company leaders and stakeholders for input. Involving key players at every stage of the game helps them “own” the vision, which is key to getting it into practice.
- Make sure the Vision Statement is consistent with every part of your business. For example, does what you say you value ring true with existing methods and tools, the services you offer, your handling of customers, employees, and stakeholders, your position on public policy, and so on?
- Give a completed copy of the Vision Statement to everyone, and hold meetings to explain the Vision and what you expect. Ask for feedback and for employees to suggest ideas for implementation. The key is making everyone feel ownership in the idea. Otherwise, they won’t be as likely to follow through on making the vision a reality.
One final thought: When creating your vision, remember to pay attention to your company’s strategic focus and marketplace competitive advantage, adding value to the company, building on current strengths, and embracing the corporation’s values. Considering these areas will help you make sure the vision makes sense from every angle.
