In today’s world, developing good managers for tomorrow’s workforce is imperative. In fact, it can easily be classified as a significant part of performance management responsibility. Management Development can begin by seeking qualified applicants from outside the company but within the industry, outside the industry altogether or within the organization, as is most often the case.

Companies must be prepared at all times to fill leadership voids within the organization. Thus, managers should constantly be grooming someone to take their places. In many larger corporations, such things as management tracks help get the process rolling. These are corporate schools where certain people are hired or targeted and groomed to take responsibility for future roles.

As you can imagine, developing skilled and effective managers is not something that happens overnight. It is a long-term process that requires getting the right people in the right places. How does this happen? First, it begins with an objective. You can determine this objective by asking the questions, “What are the qualities and characteristics imperative to the role of manager?” and “What kind of leaders do I need in my company?” Next comes the development of a plan. How are you going to get your future managers to this place? Consider such things as internal training, mentoring or instruction to broaden the capabilities of the individuals you have chosen.
