How do I choose a Life Coach?

First, you want to make sure the Life Coach is experienced, trained, or qualified in the area in which you seek help. You probably won’t find one overarching “certification” for Life Coaches, but instead ask questions about their training, experience, and specialties. For example, if you’re thinking of making the transition from working for a corporation to starting your own business, you ideally want to work with a coach who knows something about starting a company and about life transitions.

Next, you want to make sure the person is someone you like. When it comes down to it, no matter how qualified the person, if you don’t get along, the relationship’s just not going to work. Many life coaches offer the first session for free. Use this time, or even time over the phone before you get to a first session, to just talk with the coach. Are you compatible? Do you like his or her speaking style? Does the coach treat you the way you want to be treated? Do you feel like the person could be a good partner in your endeavor—or is he or she too pushy, bossy, and autocratic? Remember you’re looking for someone to partner with you on your journey, not someone to be your boss.
