What is Goal Setting?

Have you ever heard the saying that “Without a goal, you’re like a ship without a rudder, going around in circles”? A goal gives your life, your career, your day, your company—everything you’re involved in—direction. Most people wouldn’t know what to do with themselves without a to-do list, calendar, personal digital assistant—or a personal assistant, for that matter. And rarely do people show up at work without an idea of what they want or need to accomplish that day. Doing so would lend a sense of confusion, chaos, or disorganization to the day. You wouldn’t know what project to start on first, or what needs to come next.

Setting goals helps you decide what you want to achieve, and then helps you set specific steps to move you toward completion of those goals. When you think about it, the most successful people set high goals for themselves. Athletes set goals, such as to win a game, win a championship, go pro, win an Olympic Medal, whatever the case is for their sport. And you can bet Donald Trump sets goals for himself, in terms of profitability, acquisitions, and so on. He didn’t get where he is today by just going with the flow. No; he set goals, took steps to reach those goals, and succeeded; and then, he set more goals instead of stopping at the end of the first success.

Goal setting sets your sights on something long-term, and gives you something to strive for on the day-to-day. It helps you stay focused on what’s important, and helps you ignore mere distractions in your day.
