How do I get started setting my personal goals?

Goals come in two sizes: grand life goals, and small goals that feed into those grand life goals. It often helps to break goals into the following categories, or similar categories that suit your life:

Family and home

Financial and career

Spiritual and ethical

Physical and health

Social and cultural

Educational

Goals also fall into long-term, short-term, and immediate categories. One exercise that is particularly helpful is, after listing your goals for the six categories above, mark each goal with an ‘l’, ‘s’, or ‘i’ to indicate the time period, or put a number of years next to it to indicate when you want to have achieved the goal. By breaking the goals into time periods, you can better focus on which tasks to do today, and which of today’s tasks will feed into a short-term, or even long-term goal farther down your list.

By setting goals in all of the categories listed, you can focus on balancing your life. If, when you jot down your goals by category, you see that you’re more heavily invested in one category than the rest, this might help you see that other areas of life need attention, too. For example, if you’ve listed 12 items under financial and career, but only one item under physical and health, take that as a warning sign: it’s time to step up your physical fitness or schedule an appointment with your doctor!
