Do any of the above scenarios sound like you? Have you found yourself saying similar things—without knowing where to turn? If so, then there’s a good chance that you need to work with an Executive Coach. To find one, rely on word-of-mouth advertising, reputable Web sites, recommendations from local business organizations, and from colleagues in your business.

You want to make sure to choose an Executive Coach who has the knowledge and expertise in the field and even in the specific area in which you’re struggling. Ask for the names of people the coach has worked with previously, then follow up by calling those references. Ask them why they liked the coach; what the coach did for them specifically; how much time the coach lent to his or her case; what the coach charged; whether there were any problems with the coach, and if so, how those problems were resolved; and whether the person whole-heartedly recommends the coach.

Finding a good fit for you is key. You don’t want someone who will tell you just what you want to hear; that won’t move you forward. But make sure the person will tell it to you straight and give you the time, skills, and information you need to be effective.
