Product Development is the development and/or creation of new, enhanced or replacement products or services within a business. The process of creating products to serve the needs and desires of customers or altering an already established product to better serve the consumer is not the only aspect of Product Development.
Product Development is concerned with far more than just the simplistic notion of creating a product because within the creation of a product there are many different stages and aspects of Product Development that go into completing the overall task.
These aspects are strategizing, organizing, brainstorming for a concept, instituting a plan of marketing for the product, evaluating the product once it has become fully formed and the subsequent commercialization of the product to the consumer.
Therefore, these aspects and stages thoroughly describe and define all the various tasks and necessities of action that occur from the first phase of the idea to the official launch and distribution of the product to the customers.
So even though Product Development is commonly regarded as a set of business activities that start with an idea in which a market hole will be filled or a market need will be met and ends with the production and distribution of the product to the marketplace, there is much more involved within these processes. In addition, there is the improvement of an existing product within the realm of Product Development as Product Development can be, and in all truth must be, an ongoing process of meeting the consumer’s needs and demands.
