A concept is an idea that becomes a viable product which will meet consumer demand and solve a market problem or void. As stated earlier, an idea becomes a concept after discussion and the fine tuning of a rough idea into a plausible means of production and sales. No matter how good a concept may be though, the concept is just an idea and is most importantly untested, which is why the development of a prototype is so utterly essential to Product Development, as a whole.

The prototype is the middle step in the ladder from Concept to Commercial Product since it resembles the final product, as it is a model of what the product will look like and function as in the commercial world. Since this is the testing tool for the concept, proper evaluation of the prototype often leads to significant changes before the end design becomes finalized.

Lastly, when the finalized version of the product is mass-produced, the last step in the ladder is a successful marketing plan and promotional framework in which the consumer can be made perfectly aware of what the product does and why the product is absolutely necessary to the marketplace. This can cement a concept into a successful and profitable product.
