Before you file a patent application, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office wants you to search for existing patents on similar ideas or items. You can search existing patents at the USPTO Patent Search Room, or at a Patent and Trademark Depository Library near you.

The Office won’t grant a patent for a simple idea or suggestion. Instead, the office will examine patent applications for technical and legal merit, making sure it fits the bill, so to speak.
