You need to contact the Copyright Office, at the Library of Congress, in Washington, DC, in order to apply for a copyright. You can also contact the office for more information on what copyrights cover, what benefits there are to registering a copyright with the office, and any other details you need to know.

A copyright costs $30 for filing. You’ll also have to send in an application form, and a nonrefundable deposit of the work for which you’re applying for a copyright. Other information or copies may be needed, depending on your specific circumstances. It’s best to check with the Copyright Office Web site, or call the office directly to make sure you’ve covered everything. Many of the forms you’ll need for application are available online.
