How industries used logistics to keep track of shipping and cost was covered above, now how about inside companies. We know that in nearly every company there is a shipping department, a warehouse, and receiving, unless shipping and receiving are together. Just how is logistics used in these areas? Well here is a list of departments and how they use logistics to manage what they do:

·        Warehousing: We all know that businesses use warehouses to keep track of inventory and sales. Warehousing accommodates various functions from stockpiling to customer service. Other functions include mixing product lines for possible distribution; production storing, where semi-finished goods are kept in a certain area until the time comes to use them in production; consolidation, where all the goods that are to be shipped out are stored. This is usually in the warehouse. And finally distribution that involves actually shipping out the product. Logistics is used here to keep track of every step in the process as described above. This way nothing is left to chance and all things are accounted for.
·        Shipping/Receiving: This is the biggest part of any company. It also one of the busiest. The shipping and receiving department schedules deliveries, controls the movement and activity of delivering drivers, and makes sure the delivery truck is secured in the loading dock. They are also responsible for unloading freight and maintaining the count. Lastly, they assign and send incoming goods to the warehouse for storage. In this capacity, logistics is used to track everything and keep accurate records. By using logistics, every transaction or event is kept track of so as to limit mistakes, especially in paperwork.
·        Customer Service: The customer service department uses logistics to keep track of orders and to help customers when they call about an order. By having all the information available to them, customer service representatives can handle calls faster and provide better service to customers in a more timely fashion.
