As any advertiser will tell you, blanket advertising is very effective at reaching customers that may not know about your business or product. However, in order to maintain repeat customers, businesses are effectively using data mining to create data bases of their customers, their purchases, and even their requests.

Any business owner that receives enough requests for a certain type of product will realize that her customers have, in some way, made a link between that product and her business, even if she doesn’t carry that product. But after a few requests, she most certainly will begin to consider whether or not this product should become a part of her regular inventory.

However, business owners will tell you that you can’t wait for the customer to come to your place of business and request a product before ordering that product. Before that first customer walks in the door looking for a product is when those products need to be ordered so they are available for sale. Savvy business owners know that data mining can give them the “heads up” that a trend is starting so that orders can be placed now so that inventory is on the shelves when the first request comes in.

This form of data mining also helps the business owner know how to advertise to her customers. By knowing what the trends are before they are seen on television, retailers can begin advertising those products or services to their customers.
