How does Bug Tracking Software Work?

Bug tracking software makes bug tracking easier. These bugs are not grasshoppers, crickets or ants, but rather computer program glitches that cause computer programs to work in undesired ways with unwanted results. Bug tracking software can “track” a bug within a program, report just where in the program the bug occurs and with what frequency. Bug tracking software can also create a data file that shows both the desired and undesired results of that bug’s life.

For example, if your calculator always told you the sum of 2 + 2 was 5, you’d know your calculator had a problem. That problem is obvious when it’s such a simple equation and the right answer is so obvious. However, today’s computer programs are so complex and the “bug” may not be found for days or weeks after the program is installed, even if the bug is caused by faulty source code. In the same way, a “bug” may not exist when a program is new, but may “appear,” seemingly out of nowhere after other useful programs are installed on a computer. Whatever the cause of the bug, bug trackers can “follow” the program, finding the bug when it occurs during regular use, and then can “track” the bug’s movements after it appears.

By using the information gleaned from bug tracking software, programmers are able to isolate, duplicate and eliminate the bug by writing new source code for that program that removes, patches, or works around the old, faulty source code. The new source code then delivers the correct answer to the question, and reports that the true answer to the question of “what is 2 + 2?” as 4.
