Many online companies are finding that much of their business is for subscriptions for continuing service or information. Although many web sites are free for each use, others are available only by subscription. Examples of businesses that offer paid web sites are:

• Newspapers
Genealogy Research Sites
• Medical Information Sites
• Legal Research Sites
• Medical Research Sites
• Discount Shopping Sites, and many others.

Paid subscription sites offer subscriptions for limited or unlimited use for a certain amount of time, just as paper magazines and newspapers offer subscriptions for a set time frame. These businesses need billing software that can offer potential customers different levels of subscriptions, coordinate those subscriptions so that the customer receives what they purchase and is then reminded that their subscription is about to expire. Then with that notification, an invoice for a continuing subscription will be offered.

Most of these invoices will be “mailed” through email rather than through the post office and will then be paid online rather than with a paper check. This type of billing software must be extremely user-friendly and allow for individual differences in subscriptions, payment plans, and payment methods, all with little or no human interaction.

Another specific difference for billing software designed for online use is the need for additional layers of security to protect both the company and its customers from theft. Not only can savvy online thieves steal money from the business or its customers, but they are also in the business of stealing identities from those whose personal information is unprotected during online purchases.
