El Salvador is located on the Pacific coast of Central America. It is bordered by Honduras to the north and east and Guatemala to the west. El Salvador is the only country in Central America without an Atlantic coastline. It is the smallest country found in Central America, and is equal in size to the state of Massachusetts.

The majority of the country rests on a rich volcanic plateau nearly 2,000 feet high. The highest volcanoes in the volcanic uplands are Santa Ana at 7759 feet, San Vicente at 7159 feet, and San Salvador at 6375 feet. The volcanic activity experienced by the country has resulted in ideal conditions for planting coffee due to the thick coating of ash and lava found on the highlands. Lowlands can be found to the north and south of the elevated backbone.
