El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, and it is unique in that it is the only one in that region that is not bordered by shores on the Caribbean Sea. The country is situated in the Southeast section of the Central American isthmus. It is the most densely populated country in Central America, and is often referred to as the Land of Volcanoes. The country has seen its share of hardship from frequent and sometimes devastating volcanic activity and earthquakes. The largest city in El Salvador is San Salvador.
