The country of Ecuador is located on the northwestern shore of South America. Its borders are the Pacific Ocean on the west, Peru on the east and south, and Columbia on the north. The Galapagos Islands are also part of Ecuador. It capital city is Quito, while its largest city is Guayaquil. The name of the country comes from the Spanish word for equator, as the country sits right on the equator. The equator is an imaginary line which divides the world into its Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Spanish is the official language of Ecuador.
