Ecuador is the 62nd most populous country in the world, with an estimated population of about 13.5 million people. Its land area is about 77,000 square miles, about 9% of which is water. The population is made up of 65% Mestizos (mixed descendants of Spanish colonists and indigenous Indians), 25% Amerindians, 7% Spanish whites, and 3% Afro-Ecuadorian.
