Most of these major cities of note are capitals of the aforementioned provinces. Among these cities are Cuenca, Guaranda, Azogues, Tulcan, Tena, Puyo, and Ambato, among several others. Cuenca is the third largest city in Ecuador, trailing only Guayaquil and Quito, and is located in the province of Azuay, which is in the sierra region. The population of Cuenca is about 400,000. Portoviejo is another of the large cities in Ecuador, with a population of about 250,000. It is well known for its beautiful trees and produces many delicious tropical fruits. Puerto Francisco de Orellana, also known as El Coca, is a major travel center in Ecuador due to its proximity to the Amazon rainforest. Because of the number of tourists desiring to see this beautiful land, there is an airport in this city, although it is not a particularly large city.
