Ecuador is on the northwest coast of South America, bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east and south by Peru, and on the north by Columbia. The country is divided into four regions, three of which are contiguous, and one of which is in the center of the Pacific Ocean. The costa region is made up of the lower altitude regions in the west part of the country. It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean. The sierra region in made up of mountains and higher altitude areas in the central part of the country. The oriente is the Amazon rainforest located in the eastern part of the country. The Galapagos Islands, located some 600 miles west of the mainland in the Pacific, are the country’s final region.

The capital of Ecuador is Quito, located in the central part of the country, in a province called Pichincha. The largest city is Guayaquil, located right on the west coast and acting as an important city on the Pacific. There are a total of 22 provinces in Ecuador, each claiming its own capital, much like American states. Here is a list of the provinces: Azuay, Bolivar, Canar, Carchi, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, El Oro, Esmeraldas, Galapagos, Guayas, Imbabura, Loja, Los Rios, Manabi, Morona-Santiago, Napo, Orellana, Pastaza Province, Pichincha, Sucumbios, Tungurahua, and Zamora-Chinchipe. While we don’t have time to cover each of these provinces, we will cover a few of the major cities therein.
