The exact definition of pay-per-click advertising is a technique used by businesses to get users to their website with the purpose of introducing their products and/or services to the user, hoping that the user will buy. This advertising is placed on search engines, advertising networks, and other websites. Let’s say someone is online to look for information about Christmas. They go to a search engine like Google and type in Christmas. They see some text ads on the right hand side listing information about Christmas with a link to the website. When the user clicks on that link he/she is directed to the website where he/she can read the information. The website owner then is charged for that click. The two biggest companies to date that offer this type of advertising is Google Adwords and Yahoo! Search Marketing.

Of course the amount you may pay per keyword will vary depending on the search engine and their standard rate. You could pay as much as $0.01 per keyword to $1. It not only depends on the search engine but also on how much you can afford per day. The more you pay the more your ad is shown. Of course this also means the more money you will pay in clicks. So you will need to choose your keywords properly.
