Banner Ads benefit both the company that places the ad and the website on which it is displayed. Like commercials on television and radio, they are usually adapted – both in subject matter and content – to the site they’re on. For example, a massage clinic or makeup company is much more likely to place a banner ad on FamilyCircle.com than ESPN.com. The goal of both parties is to get you to click on the ad.

Many banner ads are placed by an exchange service such as Google AdSense or The Banner Exchange that has a database of thousands of banner ads and places them on the appropriate pages based on search results and user statistics. With some exchanges, the owner of the webpage has some control over what ads come up, including being able to filter out competitor ads.

Banner ads are found on virtually every kind of website. They are used to help provide free content on sites like webmd.com and weather.com. They are also used to allow anyone to have their own webpage at places like geocities.com and tripod.com. By selling ad space, webmasters can use the revenue to cover costs otherwise paid by their direct user.
