It may be that the perfect preschool is just around the corner from your home. But is the perfect preschool the right preschool for your child? When choosing a preschool for your child, it is important that you trust your instincts. No one knows your child better than you. If the “perfect” preschool is just too structured and demanding for your child, they he/she will not enjoy being there. Conversely, if your child needs structure to feel safe and secure, and the “perfect” preschool that your friend told you about is very relaxed and unstructured, then your child may feel anxious and worried.

The bottom line is this. The preschool and its program need to be an extension of your family’s values and goals. The preschool should build on what your child is doing and learning at home and be a step toward Pre-K or Kindergarten, not take the place of it.

As you tour each school and talk with the teachers, you will begin to form an opinion about where your child will be the safest and happiest. If, after touring several schools, you are still not sure which school is the right one for your child and family, visit the top two choices again. Ask your child if they remember anything good about any of the schools. Talking with your child will give you the best perspective on their views. Never assume you know what your child is thinking. After all, your child is the one that will be attending the preschool. It makes sense to ask her what she thinks.
