Pre-reading and reading programs are the second most popular programs in the realm of children’s educational software. However, this statistic may change with the introduction of the book/software combinations that allow children to follow along in a book, reading along with the computerized voice which allows extra help when they put the stylus on a certain word.

At first glance, these books would seem to take away the time parents spend with their children helping them to master reading one word at a time. But these books should be recognized for their ability to be with the child in the back seat while the parent drives, and for giving children a chance to achieve independently, whether or not their parents have time to read right now.

Children’s educational software offers pre-reading programs which children can play with parents or independently, and that grows with them as their ability increases. Most programs allow parents to set the child up at a beginning level that automatically increases as the child demonstrates mastery of the game’s skills. As the child successfully completes each game, their score is recorded and when certain scores are achieved consistently, the program will automatically increase the difficulty level. Because the program requires that the child achieve a certain score more than once, the child has a chance to enjoy continued success before moving to a more difficult level. Repeating levels for which they’ve already achieved success a time or two builds their confidence and prepares them for more difficult tasks.
