Foreign language software programs have progressed so far from the old LP’s which had to be played over and over to achieve mastery. Albums were limited to the amount of information a person could speak in the space that was available. Sets of cassettes had the same limitation, with larger storage limits, but with the same speed and amount of information. The learner could go no faster than the person speaking on the album or tape.

Computerized foreign language programs changed all that. On top of their ease of use and flexibility, computer software has the ability to expand vocabulary words as master increases. These games are able to move as quickly or as slowly as the student desires, and can be restarted hundreds of times without fear of scratching the album or tangling the tape.

Many foreign language programs in public and private schools are complimented by computerized foreign language skill-builders and games. Many teachers allow students to check out game disks in order to encourage them to experience foreign language in the relaxed setting of their home, in hopes that it will become more meaningful to them when they have fun with the computerized game.

Children’s foreign language software is often paired with a lovable character that reacts to their key strokes and mouse clicks in an encouraging way, much the same way a friend would. Stories are told which incorporate the child’s native tongue as well as the less familiar language. By combining the two languages, the relationship between the two is blurred, blazing the trail for increased understanding of both languages.
