There are a myriad of educational programs available to children today. The home computer has brought this availability to our children in thousands of forms. The benefits these early learning programs bring to our children will probably not be understood for many years to come.

The casual, independent nature of computer programs for children gives them opportunities for individualized learning that’s not possible in every classroom setting. It also allows children to work at their own pace on activities that are of interest to them at the moment. However, even though the child has the opportunity for free choice, most programs will not allow the participant to progress unless all portions of a skill are mastered.

There are programs available in every subject area and every learning level. Most early learning software programs are defined first into subject and then into age ranges. For example, a particular math program would be designed for children ages 2 - 4 or 4 to 6. In addition to math software, there are programs designed for pre-readers, readers of every level, foreign language studies, keyboarding programs, and even computer skills.

Preschool children can choose programs that help them learn their letters, the sounds each of those letters make, numbers and how to count, add, subtract, multiply, and divide. While all this learning is going on, the children are busy having fun and may not realize that learning is taking place.

Children’s educational software has become a multi-million dollar industry developing programs for casual home use, but also for families that home school, and students who need extra help, but cannot afford a tutor.
