The besieged president of Miami-Dade's Early Learning Coalition resigned last Friday in a vague letter that gave no explanation for the departure and made no reference to the criticism that has dogged her career over the past year.

Since last spring, President Paula Bender had been constantly maligned by policy crises and personal allegations against her. The coalition was forced to cut roughly a thousand children from after-school care in February after receiving a smaller bailout from the Children's Trust than expected.

Last spring, Bender was criticized for the pre-kindergarten program's poor registration process. Numerous employees have accused her of cronyism - pressuring Florida International University to hire her daughter and acting improperly by awarding a contract to a friend's company.

Yeesh. You know you've got problems with bureaucracy when a children's programming manager gets busted for cronyism and handouts.
