If your creditor sues you and obtains a court judgment against you which you don't pay, he may collect that judgment by having the court order your employer to take no more than 25 percent of your paycheck and pay that money to the sheriff, who will forward it to your creditor.

The wage garnishment provisions of the Consumer Credit Protection Act (CCPA) protects employees from discharge by their employers because their wages have been garnished for any one debt, and it limits the amount of an employee's earnings that may be garnished in any one week.
