Since a yeast infection is a result of an overgrowth of good yeast that is already present in the vagina, it is difficult to say that any one thing “causes” the infection, though many things can contribute to the excess growth of the yeast. However, there are certain activities that can lead to a yeast infection, and there are also certain people who are more likely to get a yeast infection. Following are the some of the contributors or causes of yeast infections:

·        Douching, because it can kill of organisms that suppress the growth of yeast, can trigger a yeast infection.
·        Wearing tight clothing, especially pants, can result in excess yeast.
·        Improper cleaning, such as wiping from the back to the front after using the restroom, can lead to a yeast infection.
·        Staying in a wet bathing suit can also promote yeast growth.
·        Taking in too much sugar can quicken the growth of yeast.
·        Feminine products, especially if scented or left present for too long, can contribute to yeast infections.
·        Sexual intercourse with someone who has a yeast infection – man or woman – can transmit the infection.
·        Birth control pills sometimes cause yeast infections.
·        Women who are taking antibiotics or other medications are often at a higher risk of obtaining a yeast infection.
·        Women who are pregnant are more likely to suffer from yeast infections than those who are not.
·        Women with diabetes are also prone to have vaginal yeast infections.
