Schizophrenia is an acute and disabling brain disease found all over the world. Approximately 1% of the world’s population develops the disorder; in fact, there are over 2 million Americans who suffer from this illness each year. People diagnosed with schizophrenia often experience terrorizing symptoms such as hearing internal voices that no one else hears, or believing that others are controlling their thoughts or scheming to hurt them. Not surprising, these symptoms often leave schizophrenia patients withdrawn and anxious. Their speech and actions can become so confused and disoriented that they may become frightening or unintelligible to others. Although there are treatments existing that can alleviate many symptoms, most people with schizophrenia continue to experience a number of symptoms the duration of their lives. It is estimated that no more than one out of five individuals fully recover.
