Our mothers called it “the change.” This term applied to the “metamorphosis” that takes place during menopause. “Meno” means menstruation and “pause” refers to a cessation of. It is a period during which menstruation ceases and many other chemical changes take place in a woman’s body. Primarily, the ovaries decrease production of estrogen and progesterone. This change usually occurs over five to ten years between the ages of 35 to 60. Menopause can also occur when the ovaries are surgically removed or stop functioning for some other reason, such as chemotherapy treatments.
