There are many individuals who have to look for the nearest bathroom any time they enter a public place, knowing that at any time their stomachs may become upset. Their bowels are greatly affected by the foods they eat, stress, and some other causes, and often result in cramping, diarrhea, constipation, and/or other symptoms. These people are living with a disorder called Irritable Bowel Syndrome. What they would probably be surprised to discover is that they are not alone in their experience; in fact between 10% and 20% of the population has IBS. It is one of the most common disorders seen by general doctors and the most common diagnosed by doctors who specialize in the disorders of the stomach and intestines.
If individuals suspect that they may have IBS, they should contact their primary health care provider. Even though IBS is primarily diagnosed through the symptoms, there are tests that can be given to rule out any other intestinal disorders and also treatment options which include altering your diet, lowering your stress, and taking medications. Although Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be painful and frustrating, it does not have to control your life.
