Factors that you CAN'T control

• Gender- Men are much more likely to have hypertension than women are before they reach menopause. Women tend to ultimately have the same amount of risk as men, but it just shows up about 10 years later in women.
• Age- For most people, your blood pressure will increase with your age. For men, this typically happens around the age of 45. For women, this occurs around the age of 55. After age 75, more than 75 percent of women will have high blood pressure.
• Heredity- This does not mean that you will automatically follow in your family’s footsteps, but it does mean that if there is a history of hypertension, you should definitely consult your doctor. You are obviously at a greater risk for high blood pressure if someone in your family has had it in the past, but it is also not a determining factor in your health.
• Race- As shown in many studies, those from an African descent tend to have many more incidences of high blood pressure.
• Diabetes- It is still very unclear how diabetes affects blood pressure; it is evident that it does.

Since these five factors can not be changed or avoided, it is best to just be aware of what is going on with your health. If you have family history or simply questions and concerns about hypertension, make an appointment with your physician to learn more.
