The causes of fibromyalgia are not well defined at this point in the study of the syndrome. Still, there are some indicators that a person may be more likely to experience fibromyalgia.
  • Gender:  Fibromyalgia occurs more often in women than in men.
  • Age: Fibromyalgia tends to develop in people during early and middle adulthood. But it can also occur in children.
  • Family history: The disorder seems to be prevalent among families.
  • Rheumatic disease. If you have a rheumatic disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, you may be more likely to have fibromyalgia even though researchers say it is not an inflammatory disease in and of itself.
