We’ve all had those moments when we’re down or sad about something and we say “I’m depressed”. But depression goes beyond a few days of feeling sad or down. It lasts for several weeks at a time and can change even the most social person. Depression is caused by chemical changes in the brain that affect how it works. Brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters send and receive messages from your brain to the rest of your body. Neurotransmitters for the most part are responsible for our emotional state. In someone suffering from depression these chemical messages are not delivered correctly causing the depression. Many people suffering from depression loose interest in things that once brought them great joy. They also become very isolated. There are different triggering factors that can cause depression. Several treatment options as well as combined treatments are available. It is important to remember if you or a loved one is suffering from depression not to feel ashamed. Anyone can be affected by depression, it does not only affect one race, age, or tax bracket.
