A new breast cancer drug could be available next year after exceptional trial runs. Doctors are saying the drug lapatinib could double life expectancy of patients suffering from advanced forms of the cancer.

Lapatinib has been shown to work much better than the also-touted Herceptin, and has the distinct advantage of being available in pill form with fewer side effects.

The drug was particularly successful in patients whose cancer had returned. Makers GlaxoSmithKline are currently rushing through the appropriate license applications in Britain and the U.S.

Tens of thousands of women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Up to 20% have advanced forms which have spread locally or to other parts of the body.
