In 1943, autism was described for the first time by Dr. Leo Kanner of Johns Hopkins University. His finding of autism was based on his research of 11 children he observed between 1938 and 1943. What he noticed in these children was that they withdrew from human touch as early as one-year old. Unfortunately, from the 1940’s to the 1960’s children of autism were thought to have schizophrenia. However, the medical community was able to break away from this misconception in the 1960’s.
