It can be extremely overwhelming for a parent to find out that their child has been diagnosed with autism. Autism derives from a neurological disorder that impinges on the normal functioning of the brain, and greatly affects the way a child views the world. It is characterized by abnormal functioning of the child in the following primary areas: communication, social interaction, and behaviors such as play. There is no known cause for developing autism although several risk factors have been identified. In addition, several red flags may help parents be aware of possible autistic tendencies such as a child not gesturing or babbling by at least 12 months. Although there is no present cure for autism, both intervention and education approaches are significant in addressing some of the challenges associate with autism. Both the child and family can learn important skills and intervention techniques that will meet the needs of the individual child.
