Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) that influences the way a child sees and relates to the world. Autism often prohibits a child from social interaction with others to the point that some children even shun human contact. The disorder is four times as likely to occur in males as in females, and typically appears before a child is 3 years of age.
