Autism is a severe developmental disability that normally appears during the first three years of life and derives from a neurological disorder that impinges on the normal functioning of the brain. Autism is distinguished by irregular development of reasoning skills, communication skills, social skills, and even play activities. Autism, however, is a spectrum disorder which means that it affects each person differently. A child may not evidence symptoms of autism until around the age of 2 ½ years old.
