Autism Causes

Presently, there is no known cause for autism. Researches have been investing their studies into finding out what genes cause autism. Although gene research has not produced an exact cause of autism, it has identified several risk factors that are connected with autism. The following are the risk factors identified so far:

  • Risk factors in pregnancy and delivery: It is possible that women with infections during their first trimester or have a lack of oxygen during delivery may possess a higher risk in contributing to autism.
  • Genetic history: 30%-50% of autism cases are inherited. It is a good idea to know your family’s history when going to visit your prenatal doctor.
  • Gene mutation: It is possible that there are several genes that are connected with brain function that may “mutate” to cause autism, although it is not sure how this mutation occurs.
  • Fragile X Syndrome: 3% of autistic cases are attributed to this disorder.
