Your family doctor may refer you to an allergist to determine if you have allergies and what triggers your allergic reactions. A series of test will be performed and you will be questioned concerning your symptoms.

The best way to avoid allergic reactions is to avoid the substance causing your allergic reaction. This is called avoidance and by avoiding the allergen you may not have a need for medication. Be aware that when avoiding foods such as peanuts, you must avoid all products containing peanuts or peanut oils. Keep the following tips in mind when trying to avoid airborne allergens:

• Bathe pets and keep them off of your furniture.
• Remove carpets or rugs because hard floors do not collect dust as much as carpets.
• Cover pillows and mattresses with special covers to avoid dust mites.
• Wash bedding every week in hot water.
• Do not hang heavy drapes that allow dust to gather.
• Keep windows closed during pollen season.
• Change clothing after being outside if your allergy is triggered by pollen or grass.
• Do not mow the lawn if you are allergic to grass.
• Clean your home often to rid it of dust, pet hair and dander, and other airborne allergens. Wear a mask while cleaning.
• Wash shower curtains and bathroom tiles often to eliminate mold.
• Change filters in air conditioning/heating units and vents frequently.
• Store firewood outside of your home to keep out mold and pollen.
• Keep leaves raked but wear a mask while raking.
• Use a dehumidifier to eliminate mold in basements. The dehumidifier should be cleaned often.

Medications are often used to treat allergies. This may come in the form of pills, nasal sprays, or shots. There are also good over the counter medications that can be used to treat allergies. Check with your doctor to see which medications are right for you.

Although you may find the thought of getting shots very disturbing, they can be an effective way of dealing with allergies. Shots will not cure the allergy but can help raise your body’s tolerance to the allergen. A small amount of the allergen is injected into your body changing your immunity to these allergens. In time, this will help to block the reaction triggered by these substances.
