One in five Americans are allergic to some type of substance. The following are common allergens from which many people suffer:

• Food allergies – This is the most common allergy among babies but allergies to food tend to go away as a child ages. The most common food items that people are allergic to are milk and other dairy products, eggs, soy, wheat, peanuts and tree nuts, fish and shellfish. Most food allergies cause stuffy noses, an itchy rash, and diarrhea.
• Drug allergies – Penicillin is the most common allergy trigger among medications. Medications used to treat infections are common causes of allergic reactions along with many over the counter medications.
• Skin allergies – Poison ivy, oak, and sumac are the most common causes of skin allergies. Other triggers of skin reactions are dust mite, some foods, latex, and cockroaches.
• Insect allergies – The poison in insect bites and stings from bees, wasps, ants, cockroaches, and dust mites can trigger allergic reactions. Insect allergens can be severe causing an anaphylactic reaction among some people.
• Latex – Latex allergies are more common among healthcare workers who are continuously exposed to latex.
• Chemicals allergies – The chemicals found in detergents, cosmetics, fragrances, household cleaners, and pesticides are common allergy triggers.
• Airborne allergies – Also called environmental allergens, these are the cause of 75% of all allergies. Millions of people are allergic to mold spores, dust mites, animal dander, and tree, grass, and weed pollen.
