Scott, Smith, Thor, Oakley, Moose, Dragon and Fly are just a few of the most popular brands of motocross goggles. Each brand has slightly different styling and features, but essentially they are all the same. It is important that you check out several different brands of motocross goggles before making your final selection. Motocross goggles are a one size fits all piece of equipment. The head strap adjusts to fit the size of the riders head or helmet, which ever the case may be. The only exception to this is the difference between junior and adult sizes. Junior sizes will have a small viewing area to compensate for the smaller face size of a child. If you are at an age when it is questionable whether a junior or adult size should be purchased it is recommended that the adult size be selected. By selecting the adult size, even if the goggles are a little large for a year or two, once the rider has grown, he/she will appreciate not being required to purchase a new, larger adult size of motocross goggles

The most important features to consider when purchasing a pair of motocross goggles besides size and tint or the lack thereof is anti-fog features and impact resistance. There are a couple of methods of combating the fogging of goggles. One of the most common is to coat the goggles with an anti-fogging liquid. Another is to place small battery operated fans on the top of the goggles and yet another method is to design the goggles with multiple layers of plastic lenses with air in-between them. By far the easiest method is to purchase goggles that come pretreated with a material to help resist fogging. If you purchase a pair and have fogging problems you can purchase a fan unit to attach to the top of your goggles to eliminate fogging.

Impact resistance is very important and standard on essentially all motocross goggles. UV protection is another benefit that some goggles may provide and should be considered as an additional benefit.

With Helmet: Motocross straps are designed to be used with an approved motocross helmet. The straps adjust great lengths to go over the exterior of the helmet and stay in place. The motocross goggles only need to be removed from the helmet for cleaning and or storage. The motocross goggles can be put on by the rider in two ways. They could first be put on the helmet and the rider could then put the helmet on his/her head or the rider could put the goggles around his/her neck, put the helmet on his/her head and then put the goggles onto the helmet. This is simply a matter of preference.
Motocross helmets have a built in visor that helps block the sun from the rider’s eyes and keeps the goggles, as well as his/her head, in place.

Without a Helmet: It is not advised to operate motocross equipment without the use of a helmet. However, motocross goggles are designed in such a way that it is not necessary to wear a helmet to operate the goggles. You should consider that goggles will in no way keep your brain inside of your head without a helmet in case of an accident.

Who Should Use: Anyone operating a motocross vehicle should wear motocross goggles. Whether racing professionally or just recreationally on dirt, sand, mud, asphalt, snow or ice, day or night, all riders should wear motocross goggles meeting the standards set herein.

A rider may also already own a pair of sunglass thereby avoiding purchasing additional eye protection. Sunglasses may also take the place of tinted goggles if you desire to only purchase non-tinted goggles. They may be used when the sun is bright and some pairs can even be used under a pair of non-tinted goggles.

Disadvantages of Sunglasses: Sunglasses are not as safe as goggles. Most pairs of sunglasses do not keep wind or dust out of a rider’s eyes. Sunglasses are also not a flexible as goggles and may break during a wreck.

When cleaning dirt, dust or mud you should be sure to use water to remove any large debris or mud. Most goggles come with a soft cloth that is recommended for cleaning the lens. If this is not included use a soft cloth material you have at home. Be sure to gently wipe the lenses during cleaning.

Storage: Keep your goggles in a safe place when they are not being used. It is advisable to keep them in a storage bag with your other motocross gear so they are not scratched or lost. Most motocross goggles come with a bag for storage.

Anti-fog: You can purchase anti-fog cream to apply to your goggles if they are fogging up during your ride. Be sure to only apply this cream if you have experienced problems in the past. Applying an anti-fog cream to a brand new pair of goggles that have already been treated may have the opposite effect that you desire.

Safety: Motocross pants are designed of rip resistant materials that will protect a rider in the event that an accident should occur. Most trails possess many hazards such as hard soil, rocks, trees and more that could seriously injury a rider’s legs and mid section if not protected. Although motocross pants cannot protect a rider from the most serious of injuries, they are able to reduce the cuts and scrapes that would most likely occur if alternative articles of clothing were used in place of MX pants.

Motocross pants have additional layers of protection built into the area surrounding the rider’s knees. This additional layer of safety is designed to protect the area of the rider’s leg that most likely will endure the initial impact of an accident. Although most MX pants contain this additional layer of protection, it is a good idea to seriously consider adding knee pads to your leg apparel. Knee pads can protect the bones and muscles surrounding your knee from the most serious of wrecks. Having this extra layer of protection could add safety and piece of mind to all motocross riders. Knee pads may slightly decrease the rider’s level of comfort, but the alternative of potentially risking injury, surgery and/or rehab should cause consideration of this additional layer of protection at the very least.

Comfort: Motocross pants, if fitted and maintained correctly, can be rather comfortable to the rider. These pants are designed to tuck into the riders boots to help keep them in place and to reduce debris from entering into the rider’s MX boots. It is advised that a rider bring a change of pants to wear rather than remaining in MX pants for a long period of time after riding. MX pants are often too dirty to be worn in the rider’s automobile after riding and can be sweaty, muddy and all around gross after a fun day of hitting the trails. Changing out of these pants into something clean will increase the rider’s level of enjoyment.

Although most pants do not come with extra padding in the rear, they are designed in such a way as to endure the strains placed on the rear and crotch section of the pants.

Alternatives: Many MX riders consider jeans to be a suitable alternative to motocross pants. While jeans do provide some layer of protection, they will not last as long or protect as well as motocross pants will. In addition, most rider’s will wear an entire outfit consisting of a motocross jersey, gloves, helmet, boots, chest protector, exedra that will coordinate with MX pants and make the entire outfit complete. By wearing motocross pants as part of an entire motocross rider’s safety gear, the rider significantly increases his/her level of safety, comfort and enjoyment.

Shorts may also be considered, but have no place on a motocross dirt trail whether the rider is a professional or recreational rider. The only exception to this rule might come if a rider was out on sand dunes. If the riding area is just sand and the rider is attempting to escape the heat, it may be acceptable to replace MX pants with shorts. However, scrapes and cuts can occur on sand just as they can on dirt, mud or any other surface so rider be-ware.

Riding without any form of pants or shorts is not recommended under any circumstances. Despite the potential for injury to the rider, innocent by-standers should not be forced to endure such an activity.

If stored correctly during non-use, a quality pair of motocross pants should give the rider years of riding enjoyment.

Cleaning: Motocross pants can be washed by hand or by machine in cold water. Special dry cleaning is not necessary. Motocross pants should not be dried in a machine that tumble dries or by heat. Once these pants have been washed they must be hung out and allowed to drip dry. Using a heat dryer to dry motocross pants will shrink and damage them. Most special cleaning agents can be used to clean your pants, but you should be careful to clean a test spot first before applying any chemical to all of the pant material. MX is inherently dirty and therefore extra care will be necessary to restore you pants to any condition remotely resembling new once they have been worn on the trail.

Size: Motocross pants are measured by waist only. It may be advisable to purchase a size one or two inches larger than your normal pant size. This will allow you to continue to comfortably wear your pants even if you gain a few pounds of the years. Most motocross pants come with the ability to adjust the length of the waistband. Motocross pants vary in range, but certainly are not a cheap investment that a purchaser will desire to make repeatedly. Keep this in mind when deciding what your current and future waist size may be.

Value: The internet revolution has greatly increased the purchaser’s ability to shop for price. Motocross pants generally can only be found in small local bike shops which may be few and far between in your area. By shopping on-line, you can greatly increase your pant purchasing options. Simply perform an internet search of “motocross pants” and you should find plenty of on-line retailers ready to take your order. Keep in mind, the longer you are able to wear your pants, the greater the value to you will be. Therefore, choose your brand, quality and size carefully. Also be sure that the style of motocross pants you select will suit your future personality and tastes as well as your current ones.
