When you have taking all you want with your DV camera, you want to download it to your PC. Now it depends on what PC you have. Many people use Apple. Apple of course uses FireWire since this is the fastest way to go. Of course, PC manufacturers caught on and decided to make FireWire for PCs. FireWire has its advantages because a typical speed for it is 400 Megabits per second. FireWire is used predominantly by DV camera users because of the following:

• You can use thin cables to make the connection to your PC much easier.
• If you need to you can daisy chain up to 63 devices to the computer. This way only one port is used.
• FireWire supports plug-and-play so it can be easily installed and set up.
• You can unplug it while the computer is on without damaging the equipment.

As for hardware, you will notice a FireWire connector is automatic with DV cameras. So you don’t have to buy any extra hardware. The only problem on the other end is connecting the cable to the PC. In this case you will need a FireWire adapter card installed in the PC so the cable can be plugged into it.
