If you are talking pictures for the purpose of sending them over the Internet by email, you need a lower resolution. This is because speed of transmission is important here. When you are printing out a picture, you need a higher resolution because, as you work with printers and photo printing, that photos are usually printed at between 240 and 360 dpi. Higher resolutions are also sharper because the pixels are closer together. Here are other factors you need to look into when choosing the right resolution for your images:

• Monitor displays: When you look at an image on your monitor, you must remember that a monitor usually displays the image at between 72 and 90 dpi. This of course will depend on the size of your monitor and current resolution.
• Web use: If you are planning on sending images over the Web, a resolution of 150x250 pixels (thumbnail size) to 600x800 pixels for a full page. If the image that is set at 600x800 is too big, you can always lower the resolution without any noticeable loss of picture quality.
• Aspect ratio: Here is an important term to remember. Each image sensor has a different aspect ratio. This is the ratio of image height to width. The typical ratio of an image is 1:1. However, many image sensors you will find may be higher than this.

Choosing the right type of digital camera is important because if you don’t get the right one, your images may not be as sharp as you would like them to be. Pixel and image size has a strong correlation to the type of camera you have. So choose wisely.
