Other than the image sensor that takes the image and processes it, the other most important part of the camera is the lens. The lens is what allows the camera to see the image and let the light go through so the camera can pick up as much detail of the image as possible. Otherwise, you would not get the image you are trying to shoot, therefore receiving a blank image in the camera. Camera lenses come in all types, shapes, and sizes. Not all cameras have the same lens either. The cheaper ones have simple lenses, while the more expense ones are more sophisticated types. In order to get a camera with the best type lens you need to know the different lenses available so you can make a wise choice.

• Focal length: This is the most important part of the lens. This is what determines a lens ability to view an image. Most lenses have the ability to view an image three ways: wide angle, normal, and telephoto.
• Zoom lenses: Many digital cameras come with a zoom lens. And some of these lenses allow you to change the focal length right on the spot. A lens focal length is specified by its magnification. Zoom lenses usually come in two types: optical and digital.
• Macro mode lenses: Most digital cameras are common for one thing: they all have a macro mode lens. These lenses are like a regular lens until you switch them to macro mode. With this mode you can get very close to an object. This way the image appears really enlarged.
• Interchangeable lenses: For many years photographers wanted the ability to change lenses when there was a need for it before shooting. With the new interchangeable lenses this is now possible. Although low end digital cameras don’t allow for such a feat, but they do provide lens converters that will allow the lens to be changed.
• Maximum aperture: Every time you press the shutter release button, the camera’s shutter opens and light enters by way of the lens onto the image sensor. In order for the picture to be as perfect as possible, you want the right amount of light to strike the sensor. To control this light you need an aperture. This is an adjustable hole in the lens through which light passes.
